Bill of Lading (B/L) & Air Waybill (AWB): The Gatekeepers of Customs Clearance

In freight forwarding, two of the most critical documents for successful customs clearance are the Bill of Lading (for sea freight) and the Air Waybill (for air freight). Without them, cargo can't move legally or be released by customs.

The Bill of Lading is a legal document issued by the shipping line or freight forwarder that serves three main purposes:

1. Proof of Shipment – Confirms the goods were handed over to the carrier for transport.

2. Title of Ownership – Acts like a property title; whoever holds the Original B/L or Telex Released BL have the right to claim the goods.

3. Contract of Carriage – Outlines terms between the shipper and carrier, including destination, Incoterms (if necessary), and freight charges (if necessary).

✈️ Air Waybill (AWB) – For Air Freight

The Air Waybill is a non-negotiable document issued by the airline or air freight forwarder. Unlike the B/L, it does not represent ownership but still holds critical information for customs clearance.

2. Cargo Movement Details – Shows origin, destination, number of pieces, and weight
